Rhythm Sisters "Summer Release" Playshop! (August 2015)


NEW! Rhythm Sisters "Summer Release" Playshop!
Sunday August 23rd at 1-5pm in Vallejo, CA


Join us for a special half-day rhythm intensive to honor and celebrate our individual and collective struggles, perseverance, resilience, and healing as a community. We will spend the day exploring a specific West African rhythm that's played to celebrate when a woman has overcome a personal hardship or challenge. The session will focus on:
 

- Learning all the drum (djembe and dunun) and bell parts.
- Playing the introductory break and an "inside the rhythm" call and response break.
- Specific solo phrases.
- The story and song for this rhythm.JUST ADDED The delightfully talented Francesca Genco of Lilac Music will be teaching the song that accompanies the rhythm we're playing! 
- Rhythm notation for all the parts (handouts will be provided).
This special program is open to women and girls age 12 and older. Appropriate for drummers of ALL levels, Drums are available if needed.

Location: IntegriTea, 717 Marin St, Vallejo. Plenty of street parking available. Accessible by Ferry from S.F. or BART/Bus from elsewhere. Rideshare opportunities will be arranged.

Sunday 9/14 @ 2:30-4pm - "2nd Sundays" Monthly North Bay Drummm Circle at The Hub Vallejo, 350 Georgia St. This fun, playfully challenging drum circle is facilitated by DRUMMM Rhythmic Events founder Jeni Swerdlow, MA-ATR. Open to all ages, levels, cultures, and styles of drumming. No prior musical experience is necessary to participate. Adults $10; Kids (12 + under) $5. Bring a drum, or borrow one for $5, first come first serve.

Thursday 9/18 @ 3:30-4:30pm - Drummm OneBEAT at Danville Library, 400 Front St. DRUMMM hits the Arts Enrichment Book Club - fun for kids of all ages! FREE!

Saturday 9/20 @ 4-5:30pm - "3rd Saturdays" Monthly East Bay Drummm Circle - Special Autumn Equinox Celebration!  at Ashkenaz Berkeley, 1317 San Pablo Ave. Open to all styles of drumming (as well as singing and dancing)! Saturday, December 15th from 4-6pm - Join DRUMMM founder + facilitator Jeni Swerdlow, MA-ATR and friends in a merry holiday rhythm celebration! Last East Bay Community Drummm Circle of 2012!

-Connect with community in rhythm!
-Celebrate the solstice + holidays, and set intentions for the coming year!
-Drummm Circle from 4-5:30pm, then enjoy a yummy potluck from 5:30-6pm (please bring a dish to share)!
-Donate to the Alameda County Food Bank (accepting canned or packaged foods)!
-Purchase beautiful drums and percussion instruments, imported from Bali!

This is an all ages, all levels, hands-on facilitated drum circle event. Beginners are encouraged to arrive on time for an introduction to hand-drumming and basic world grooves.

-Adults (13 years + over): $10 at the door if you bring a drum, $15 if you need to borrow a drum (loaner drums available on a first-come, first-serve basis).
-Kids (12 years and under--must be supervised by an adult): $5 at the door if you bring a drum, $10 if you need to borrow a drum.

Drummm Circle takes to the trees at Art in Nature Festival

FREE multidisciplinary performing arts Festival (with DRUMMM CIRCLE!) located at the


Stream Trail of Redwood Regional Park, Oakland, California


Sunday October 2, 2011 from 11am to 5pm


Experience participatory art that is in relationship with nature,

and shows the creative process of the artists.


Experience art in nature and delve into the nature of art in 12 Theme Areas featuring music, dance, sculpture, painting, martial arts, poetry, henna tattoo, circus arts, theater, visual arts, storytelling, arts & crafts and kids events.Stroll along the mile-long Stream Trail of Redwood Regional Park and experience more than 120 artists and performers tucked among the meadows, redwoods and oaks in this family, bicycle and dog friendly festival.


DRUMMM's Jeni Swerdlow and friends will be leading hands-on, interactive Drummm Circle sessions throughout the day. No experience is necessary, everyone is invited to participate. Drums will be provided or you can bring your own. More info is at www.DRUMMM.com.

JENI SWERDLOW, MA, ATR
President, Founder, and Expert Rhythm Facilitator

San Francisco Bay Area percussionist and art therapist Jeni Swerdlow is a dynamic and engaging facilitator, trainer, presenter, and performer. Founding DRUMMM in 2000, her interactive, rhythmic events have captivated many thousands of participants at several hundred events in the U.S. and abroad. In 2009 alone, DRUMMM brought the experience of drumming to over 9000 participants across America!

A Registered Art Therapist (ATR), Swerdlow has over 15 years of professional facilitation experience. In addition to earning an M.A. in Art Therapy from the University of Illinois Chicago and a B.A. in Visual Arts and Psychology from University of California San Diego, Swerdlow has completed extensive trainings in drum circle facilitation with HealthRHYTHMS and Village Music Circles. Since 1999, Swerdlow has immersed herself in the study of traditional/cultural drumming and dance, including training in Senegal, West Africa.

Swerdlow is best known for her innovative strategies and playful attitude that inspire drumming with freedom and confidence among diverse populations. She is currently working on her first book, documenting the rhythmic activities, games, and best practices Swerdlow has developed over the many years of her work with groups.

Swerdlow has received numerous grants for her DRUMMM programs throughout the U.S. She is a professional member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild, as well as the Global Network of Expressive Arts Facilitators. She has been endorsed by drum manufacturer REMO Inc. since 2006. In 2008, Swerdlow co-founded the Northern California Drum Circle Collective, an association for drum circle facilitators practicing in the Bay Area.

As a percussionist, Swerdlow has performed with such renowned groups as Mickey Hart’s Global Drum Project, Redmoon Theater, and Holy Goat Ensemble. Swerdlow currently enjoys playing with the deliciously danceable samba band, The Loyd Family Players.
