Rhythm Sisters "Summer Release" Playshop! (August 2015)


NEW! Rhythm Sisters "Summer Release" Playshop!
Sunday August 23rd at 1-5pm in Vallejo, CA


Join us for a special half-day rhythm intensive to honor and celebrate our individual and collective struggles, perseverance, resilience, and healing as a community. We will spend the day exploring a specific West African rhythm that's played to celebrate when a woman has overcome a personal hardship or challenge. The session will focus on:
 

- Learning all the drum (djembe and dunun) and bell parts.
- Playing the introductory break and an "inside the rhythm" call and response break.
- Specific solo phrases.
- The story and song for this rhythm.JUST ADDED The delightfully talented Francesca Genco of Lilac Music will be teaching the song that accompanies the rhythm we're playing! 
- Rhythm notation for all the parts (handouts will be provided).
This special program is open to women and girls age 12 and older. Appropriate for drummers of ALL levels, Drums are available if needed.

Location: IntegriTea, 717 Marin St, Vallejo. Plenty of street parking available. Accessible by Ferry from S.F. or BART/Bus from elsewhere. Rideshare opportunities will be arranged.

Offered by Francesca Genco of Lilac Music and Jeni Swerdlow of DRUMMMRenew yourself in the company of women as we transition from Winter to Spring! Prepare to soothe, connect, and awaken the mind-body-spirit through rhythm, voice, and movement.

We will drum, sing, dream, draw, dance, and walk the land of the beautiful Black Mountain Retreat Center in Cazadero, CA. 
Just 2 hours drive from S.F. Bay Area!

In addition to leading us in embodied song, Francesca will offer yoga classes as part of our weekend together. Jeni will facilitate the funnest, most empowering drumming sessions you ever dared to experience AND lead us in creating our personal visions through the process of writing and collage!

Lovely accommodations, delicious vegetarian meals, hiking trails through forest and meadows await you! Bodywork sessions with the incomparable Jeannie McKenzie will also be available.

About the Facilitators:
Francesca Genco is a singer and sound healer, yoga instructor, bodyworker and interdisciplinary arts teacher.  She is the founder of Song of the Body, which offers classes, workshops and retreats in Embodied Voice, yoga and creative expression. Percussionist and registered art therapist Jeni Swerdlow, MA-ATR is a dynamic and engaging facilitator, presenter, and performer. Founding DRUMMM Rhythmic Events in 2000, her interactive, “hands-on” group drumming programs have engaged thousands of participants at a wide variety of events in the U.S. and abroad. She is a REMO endorsed drum circle facilitator, trained HealthRHYTHMS facilitator, and lifelong student of West African drumming and world percussion.
