Hello my name is Marta Bergaz, I am from Madrid, Spain. I have been living in the United States for the past two years. I moved to San Francisco last year (from San Diego) and quickly realized that this city was for me –the people, the city, the energy…

When I heard about DRUMMM Rhythmic Events I was so excited! I am fascinated by the idea of mixing entertainment with business. I love making people smile, and learning how drums can communicate this energy. I look forward to meeting new people and learning how to play drums with Jeni Swerdlow.

In addition to earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Business Administration, I have experience working as an Account Executive and P.R. Manager. Right now I am studying Management and Communications at Intrax International School. I plan to return to Spain someday and start my own family business.

I am enthusiastic, optimistic, friendly and a hard worker—you will see when you come to a DRUMMM event!

San Jose employees get a taste of some good drumming medicine

Attendees of the City of San Jose's Wellness Conference and Fair thought they were coming to hear information about the latest trends and research in health and wellness. Little did they know that they were actually going to experience it first-hand on the drum during the afternoon Drummm Circle session...

Set on the West Plaza of San Jose City Hall, employees and passersby came upon the outdoor Drummm Circle. Having pre-set the drums and chairs, I was joined on bass drums by Violet Angell, with fellow facilitators Sue Malloy and Heather Holland lending a helping hand.

Having explained that drumming is an ancient communication technique for bringing people together in harmony, I demonstrated how the drums work. Participants quickly discovered how we can easily tap into our own innate sense of rhythm by simply listening and playing along, without fear of mistakes or failure.

Great grooves followed as I sculpted the music to bring out the dynamics, as in an orchestra. People took turns calling and responding, leading and following as we released stress and created big, beautiful music together in the moment.

Within minutes our drum circle grew to include not only managers and custodians, but also the parking attendant, a group of tourists, and a homeless man who introduced himself as Turtle. It didn't matter what language each of us spoke, our occupation, or lifestyle. We all shared in the rhythm and received its gifts that day.

Seniors get in rhythm with DRUMMM!

Thanks to my 92-year-young grandmother, Evelyn Swerdlow, I recently had the pleasure of presenting a series of Drummm Circle programs at Southern California retirement community Laguna Woods. Presented as 90-minute "hands-on" wellness workshops for the residents, the programs began with a discussion of the goals and benefits of group drumming:

-To stimulate physical activity, circulation and coordination,
-To enhance brain functioning and creativity,
-To increase socialization and connection between participants,
-To improve immune system functioning and reduce stress.

Once we got the talking out of the way, it was time to play! We passed out drums to the 70+ participants and I did a brief introduction on the various types of sounds of the drums and how to play them. Joined by local drum circle facilitator Lee Kix on the bass drum, we started a simple pulse and people joined in. Before long the drum circle was in full force, then the magic kicked in--people were smiling, laughing, singing, soloing and dancing up a storm!

I was amazed by the spirit and energy these elders dispayed--the most rawkus being a group of ladies well into their nineties. I could barely keep up with them as they did the mambo, the cha-cha, the tango, and other dances from their hey-day. The drummers matched their tempo and steps with ease as the music and dance progressed to a great crescendo and slowly faded out.

As the circle came to a close, I asked people to share about their experiences in the drum circle. One woman said "This is the most alive I have felt in years." If that's not reason enough to continue doing what I do, I don't know what is.

Drum circles emerging as effective therapy method

From: San Francisco Examiner
By: Mike Aldax Examiner Staff Writer
August 23, 2009

Bang a drum: Sal Nunez has earned national acclaim for his approach to medicinal drumming.

SAN FRANCISCO — No need for that apple — turns out that beating on a drum can help keep the doctor away, say San Francisco health officials.

Drum circles are emerging as an effective and respected treatment method for conditions such as stress and anxiety, according to the San Francisco Department of Public Health, which endorsed the practice in a recent agency report.

Medicinal drumming, formerly called “therapeutic drumming,” is a decade-old practice based on centuries-old wisdom, and is being used in The City to keep at-risk youths out of gangs and help trauma victims face their demons, among other uses, the city report said.

The practice was developed by Sal Nunez, a psychologist and professor at City College of San Francisco who has earned national acclaim for the holistic approach. He holds circles to treat trauma victims, and also hosts them for youths and adults in need of psychological counseling.

“It’s a really strong, good therapy that’s been very helpful in keeping kids off the street,” said Public Health spokeswoman Eileen Shields.

“Repetitive patterns influence brainwave activity,” Nunez said. “If a person is susceptible to seizures or perhaps psychosis or has been significantly traumatized, repetitive patterns can trigger some of that.”

The medical community is buying into the practice. Just recently, Nunez’ therapeutic drumming was recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as a “culturally appropriate” and clinically proven practice.

Nunez credits forward-thinking city officials for helping him foster therapeutic drumming.

“It’s giving a voice to the practices that cultures have been utilizing for years,” Nunez said.

HealthRHYTHMS May Help Reduce “The Columbine Effect” New Study Demonstrates Statistically Significant Improvements

by Alyssa Janney, MBA

June 29 -- Valencia, CA - According to a new study recently published in the June issue of the medical journal, Advances in Mind-Body Medicine, there is a new, highly cost-effective strategy for empowering success with at-risk youth. Instrumental anger is the the clinical term used to describe a delayed expression of emotion, including revenge or retaliation, such as what is believed to have precipitated the massacre at Columbine High School, often referred to as the Columbine Effect. According to principal researcher Barry Bittman, MD this groundbreaking study has demonstrated statistically significant improvements in the level of instrumental anger in addition to improvements in school/work performance and behavior toward others, with less depression, reactive anger and interpersonal problems than a control group who did not participate in the music making activities.

"This is an accessible, affordable and sustainable strategy that can positively impact juvenile rehabilitation." Barry Bittman, MD

The research was conducted at the Bethesda Children's Home in Meadville, Pa., which is a court-referred residential treatment facility. And 52 adolescents participated in a structured recreational music making (RMM) protocol as part of their rehabilitation process. This strategy involves enhancements to the HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming protocol, essentially customizing it for use with at-risk youth populations. Study participants were comprehensively evaluated in the research study, which spanned more than a year.

The HealthRHYTHMS Adolescent protocol is suitable for the majority of adolescents including many facing emotional, cognitive or learning challenges, because the protocol creates an opportunity to participate at one’s own level. With all the billions of dollars spent each year to isolate juvenile delinquents from society, this program offers hope that more troubled youths can be rehabilitated and learn to discover their own unique worth and share that gift with society in constructive ways, reducing recidivism and its fiscal ripple effect. "In addition to generating positive societal impact, this unique intervention could save our nation billions of dollars." Barry Bittman, MD

After a group from the study concluded, a young man referred to as “Lionel” (to protect his identity) was discharged from the program at Bethesda. HealthRHYTHMS Endorsed Facilitator Margaret Sowry recalls that mid-way through the fall semester, the facility received a telephone call from the principal of the school that Lionel attends. “I don't know what happened there at your facility, but Lionel is a changed young man. He attends school every day, he studies hard, plays basketball and is planning a future. Whatever took place there transformed him and gave him hope.” Read Lionel's Story

“Music-making can be the glue which facilitates cohesion allowing cognitive behavioral therapy to stick.” Alyssa Janney, MBA

This research demonstrates the incredible transformational power of HealthRHYTHMS. And in a broader sense this amazing new study builds on Dr. Bittman’s previous research, pointing to the significance of the music therapy profession by further demonstrating the real value of music. Music-making can be the glue which facilitates cohesion allowing cognitive behavioral therapy to stick. In my opinion Bittman’s study both spotlights the effectiveness of the HealthRHYTHMS adolescent protocol and for those who are listening closely, speaks to the potential power of including a board-certified music therapist at the table in social-service work.

Recreational music-making strategies such as the research-based HealthRHYTHMS program which do not require prior musical experience are not a substitute for traditional music therapy or music education. Yet this program is embraced by many musicians and music-therapists because it is an evidence-based tool which is versatile, user-friendly and can be life-changing. HealthRHYTHMS uses the drum, not as a performance medium, but as a tool for communication and personal expression. The study concludes that this innovative protocol for adolescents can also be readily utilized by behavioral health professionals without prior musical experience.

There are more significant findings in this tremendous research than can be easily addressed in a short article. So be sure to read the research paper to gain a more complete understanding of all the powerful implications for success with at-risk youth demonstrated by this study.

Drumming for Wellness at Alpha 1 National Conference

Article by Jeni Swerdlow. Photo by Yasuyo Yamaguchi

Karl Bruhn, considered the “Father of the Recreational Music Making movement,” lost his daughter, Debbie Rogers, earlier this year to a chronic and sometimes fatal genetic disease known as Alpha 1, which attacks the lungs and liver. To honor Debbie, Karl elicited the help of REMO Inc. and I to provide a hands-on presentation and drum circle focusing on the health benefits of drumming at the Alpha 1 Association’s National Conference in San Francisco earlier this month.

As nearly 450 attendees, the majority of whom have Alpha 1 and experience related physical challenges, sat around banquet tables after dinner and a long day of conference programs, I pondered how I was going to engage participants in drumming. How to make it meaningful for them, and facilitate in such a way that they can experience all the benefits without further stressing out their bodies?

Scientific studies are showing more and more the positive impact of group drumming and “recreational music making” (music made by non-musicians) on the immune system, brain functioning, mood and stress reduction. Much of the work that I do in my DRUMMM programs utilizes the HealthRHYTHMS protocol, which was applied in several of these groundbreaking studies.

After extensive research and conversations with Karl and Alpha 1 conference coordinator, Cathey Horsach, about the specific issues patients with Alpha 1 face, I came up with these intentions for the presentation:

1. Introduce the link between drumming and wellness,
2. Generate interest and curiosity in playing the drums (over 450 of them, graciously supplied by REMO Inc, were decoratively displayed around the room),
3. Create a safe and supportive atmosphere for people to try something new,
4. Honor Karl’s daughter and those who have died from Alpha 1 while celebrating life with everyone present,
5. Develop the music with a gentle touch, being mindful of physical challenges,
6. Help facilitate a connection to the breath, the body, the music and the Alpha 1 community,
7. Provide some fun hands-on entertainment.

This translated into starting with a brief overview of the benefits, some gentle upper body “drummer” stretches to recorded flute music, and a few members of the DRUMMM Team playing a soft drumbeat in the background. Eventually, volunteers brought the drums and world percussion instruments to the guests and away we went. After I did an initial demonstration on how to play each type of instrument, the group settled into a nice easy groove based on a simple heartbeat rhythm.

For nearly an hour people played, clapped, sang and cheered for themselves and each other. As their “Drum Circle Orchestra Conductor” I used my body language to sculpt the music, creating dynamics, inspiring cooperation, and keeping the energy and music flowing. One man began a call and response cheer to the group, shouting “Let’s Beat Alpha One,” to which everyone heartily echoed. When people got tired, I invited them to put their hands on their drum and let their bodies receive the vibration of the rhythm through their drum. I saw many closed eyes and smiling faces that night.

7 Evidence-Based Elements of HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming:

1. Stress-Reduction
2. Exercise
3. Self-Expression
4. Camaraderie/Support
5. Nurturing
6. Spirituality
7. Music-Making

Jeni Swerdlow DRUMMM's Up Teamwork at Chamber Ambassadors Rally

Earlier this month, The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce brought in some "heavy hitters" to cap off its Northern California Chamber Ambassadors Rally. An annual event that brings together Ambassadors from dozens of Northern California Chambers of Commerce, this year's theme was "Teamwork."

The Rally began its day with a high energy performance by the Cal Marching Band (U.C. Berkeley), then the attendees got down to work. Followed by a day of sitting for talks on such business topics as "Marketing Strategies" and "The Importance of Being Green," DRUMMM's Jeni Swerdlow was called in facilitate the "hands-on" grand finale to unsuspecting Ambassadors.

Moments after the emcee's final announcements, Swerdlow had the auditorium's chairs up against the walls and the 60 or so sleepy-looking participants in a circle. Dumping a huge pile of "Boomwhackers" in the middle (colorful, tuned percussion tubes that can be struck together, on the floor, or on the body), Swerdlow immediately had people clamoring for their choice of colors and sizes.

What ensued was a 20-minute team building session of epic proportions. The room instantly erupted into a cacophony of sound, then with Swerdlow's expert facilitation transformed seamlessly into an ensemble of rhythm, teamwork and celebration. Grouping teams by color, Swerdlow effortlessly sculpted the music as groups created their own distinct patterns, then wove them together into an orchestra. It was a grand example of teamwork in a most unique way.

By the end, each and every Ambassador was laughing and yelling with glee at how much fun they had and how good they were able to sound, despite most having never touched a drum before. People ran up to thank Swerdlow for ending the day on on such a positive note, noting how much more bearable their Friday rush-hour commute was going to be, thanks to her and DRUMMM.

DRUMMM welcomes new intern from Japan!

This May, Yasuyo Yamaguchi from Chiba, near Tokyo, Japan, joins the DRUMMM Team as an intern. Visiting San Francisco for 6 months to study English at Intrax International Institute, Yasuyo will be working “hands-on” with DRUMMM at events and behind the scenes for the next two months. A super smart, outgoing and accomplished drummer and computer programmer, here’s what Yasuyo had to say…

What made you decide to some to the U.S. to study English?|

One of my dreams was to go abroad studying English. Talking English with people can expand horizons. I can learn and see many things. Someday I want to work for an international company so that I can communicate with more people.

Why San Francisco?

Two years ago I visited S.F. for sightseeing and I made a lot of friends here. I like San Francisco--the weather, the people, the nice view. That’s why I decided to study here instead of Canada or Australia.

Out of all the businesses in S.F., why did you want to work for DRUMMM?

I play with a marching band in Japan, and was teaching children. (Actually, Yasuyo is the director of her marching band, but she is very modest). So when I heard about DRUMMM, I was excited! I can attend many events and meet different people. I enjoy event planning, such as for travel or parties. I like making people smile. I want to contribute to people’s happiness, smiling and having a good time.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Many things! When I’m not drumming, I like to hang out with my friends, read books at the café or library, and go snowboarding. I like to teach, especially children, how we can make sounds on the drum.

Come meet Yasuyo in person and be part of the international rhythm collaboration! Check the Calendar and join the DRUMMM circle orchestra!

"One People--One Rhythm" Drummm Circle Unites Participants at Jewish Heritage Festival

The threat of rain didn't keep folks away from the Jewish Heritage Festival on the lawn of the State Capitol in Sacramento, California on May 3rd. Spirits soared as attendees happened upon the "One People--One Rhythm" Drum Circle, presented by Jeni Swerdlow and DRUMMM. Participants ranged in age from toddler to grandpa, and came from countries as far away as Israel, Mexico, Phillipines and Russia. It was a true sense of United Nations--united in rhythm! Things really heated up when a group of displaced belly dancers answered the call of the drum and descended upon the circle. One people, one rhythm indeed!

Community Corner: Inspiring people who impact the world of DRUMMM

Meet Ellen, a 78-year-young drummer. I had the pleasure of meeting Ellen at the first Thursday night DRUMMM Rhythmplay series at the San Francisco JCC last September. She came to class early to tell me that she had lost her hearing (she only hears white noise), lost her music (she used to play cello) and lost her zest for life. While Ellen had never played a drum before, she felt compelled to come try my drumming class. What has transpired over the past 8 months has been a story of transformation, reconnection, friendship and joy. This is Ellen's story...

What made you decide to start drumming?

I decided to drum after it was suggested by my therapist as a way to keep from being isolated and a bit depressed after many losses (family and friends) and the loss of my hearing. A push to get me active and involved again.

What was your musical life like before the hearing loss?

I played violin as a child and switched to cello at age 30. My siblings and my three sons all played and there was constant music at home. I played with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony, Connecticut College for Women, and Diablo Symphony in Walnut Creek when we moved to California. I took lessons all the time and would have continued if it weren't for my hearing loss at age 60.

What does drumming do you for? How has it impacted your life?

This class has brought me much joy, new friends, a feeling of being back in an orchestra. Although I don't hear the tones I feel the rhythms, and connecting with others and the being conducted by you is great. My life has been filled with music again. That's why this drumming is such a blessing for me, and my children are delighted too!

Is there a favorite drum you enjoy playing?

I enjoy playing the Bahia Bass Drum (REMO) because of it's deep tone, and holding it between my legs is very cello-like. That drum just seems to fit and I can drummm away for quite a long time without getting tired.

Please join Ellen, Jeni and the rest of the DRUMMM crew on Thursday nights:

Catching up from World Rhythm Fest (Seattle)

I'm still vibrating from the Seattle World Rhythm Festival last weekend. It was three days of non-stop drumming and dance workshops, concerts and drum circles. Events took place in and around Seattle Center, and featured hundreds of performers, teachers and facilitators from all over the globe.

After attending the fest for five years, I had the honor and pleasure of presenting my first adult workshop this year: Bass Drummm 101--All bass drums, all the time! Forty people and as many dunun, surdos, alfaias, and Arthur Hull nesting drums you could shake a mallet at! When I say we shook the house, I mean WE SHOOK THE HOUSE!

Since I flew up from S.F., I was grateful that the community answered my call for drums. Jamtown John, John's Music, SWPS, and Michael Clark contributed drums and sticks from their own collection so that participants all had something to play.

I also learned about paradiddles from Pepe Danza, djembe solos from Ibrahima Camara, Guinean dance from Abdoulaye Sylla, Northern Brazilian Maracatu from Ju Linares, and Afro-Brazilian hip hop from Geoff Johns. I was inspired by the doubek stylings of Raquy and the Cavemen, and Mapathe Diop's Senegalese sabar rhythms.

Saturday evening everyone came together for Arthur Hull's drum circle, facilitated as playfully and masterfully as only the elf himself can do. Hundreds of people playing together in rhythmic bliss. I was of course taking notes the whole time...

At the Saturday night after party at Nectar Lounge, the energy just kept building with radical marching band Titanium Sporkestra. (My samba band, the Loyd Family Players, had played with them in Seattle earlier in the month at Honk Fest, so I was excited to see them play again.) Great grooves and unexpected twists and turns makes them fun to watch and dance to. And then there was Buraka Som Sistema from Portugal--two laptops, two live drummers, one rapper and one smoking hot singer/dancer--they really turned the heat up!

The festival wrapped up on Sunday with a grand celebration. Each corner of the pavilion was teeming with dozens of musicians from the West African, Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern and Brazilian Samba School traditions. Master of ceremonies Kim Atkinson gracefully facilitated a dance-frenzy inducing multi-cultural jam. I was fortunate to play with Robert Wallace's group of funky sambistas, chanting "All bass, all the time" on my drum.

I left the Festival feeling full and satisfied. As always, I got more than I came for and I gave more than I knew I had. Thanks to everyone who helped make Rhythm Fest happen--I look forward to participating again next year!

DRUMMM makes a HIT at the de Young Museum!

Cultural Encounters Presents a Celebration of Earth Day and Warhol Live: the de Young goes Green with Common Ground magazine

An estimated 200 people came out to Jeni Swerdlow's Drummm Circle at the Pizzoni Murals room at S.F.'s de Young Museum on April 13th. A celebration of Earth Day and the Andy Warhol exhibit, the museum was vibrating to the beat of the drums as toddlers to seniors joined together in joyous rhythm.

People poured into the room when they heard the music, not expecting to become part of the event until they were shown the drums upon entering. At least half of the participants said they had never touched a drum before, but their smiles and applause showed that they were enjoying the experience nonetheless.

Jeni was joined by guest musicians Mahsa Modarres and Carrie Staller, as well as fellow drum circle facilitators Mikael Khei (Norway) and Kathy Quain (Oakland, CA). Belly dancer Andrea Aranda shared her shimmy with the drum circle as people played along.

San Francisco DRUMMM Community is growing!

Intergenerational DRUMMM students, families and friends gathered at JCCSF on February 23rd to bring the class session to a close with a BANG. It was a spirited celebration of community through rhythm. Now in it's 4th season, the class is growing as people catch on to the joys and benefits of group drumming.

Some participants reported that they felt "revitalized" and "empowered" by the experience. Others stated that they enjoyed "the break from stress," "creating something with the group," and "the mind-body awareness" that the drumming fostered.

DRUMMM Receives Grant!

Thanks to a grant from Oakland Fund for the Arts, DRUMMM will be working with Oakland International High School students and teachers this May to develop team building, leadership and communication skills through rhythm.

About the school: Oakland International High School is a new public school in Oakland, California that serves recently arrived immigrants, a population that has typically been underserved nationally, in California, and in Oakland. Currently, our students come from four continents, 23 countries, and between them speak 22 home languages. Our mission is to provide quality alternative education for recently arrived immigrant students in English language acquisition and preparation for college. Our diverse students become active participants in our community while learning in small groups through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects and collaboration.
